Two Stunning Sustainable Homes to be Unveiled at the 2011 International Builders' Show
Two unique Clopay garage doors – the Avante and the Canyon Ridge® Collection, are headlining the Green Builder Media 2011 VISION House Series, two incredible sustainable homes that will be unveiled to the public at the International Builders' Show this week.
Green Builder Media’s VISION House Series showcases realistic, affordable green housing options to help builders, architects, interior designers and homeowners understand what it takes to design, build, retrofit, and live in a green home.
Located in the quaint community of College Park, the VISION House, a newly constructed colorful urban farmhouse, and ReVISION House, an elegant Napa-style high-performance retrofit, blend advanced green technologies with sophisticated sustainable design.
College Park epitomizes a trend in the housing market toward smaller, walkable neighborhoods. These desirable, mixed-use communities are located in close proximity to public transportation and amenities such as schools, shopping areas, and restaurants, enabling homeowners to reduce their environmental impact by limiting the need for long commutes.
Green Builder Media will offer tours of the VISION House and ReVISION House Orlando projects during the International Builders Show. Transportation will be provided from the Orange County Convention Center on January 12-14 from 10:00 AM through 4:00 PM, and on January 15 from 10:00 AM through 1:00 PM.
The VISION House
The VISION House Orlando is a new home that Green Builder Media built with partners Southern Traditions Development, Ed Binkley Design, and Designs by Pat Gaylor. It incorporates the essentials of sustainable design and construction, including a strong focus on energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor environment quality, efficient systems, sustainable materials, and disaster resistance.
Taking its roots from architectural styles in the Orlando fringe community such as Folk Victorian, Florida Coastal, and Greek Revival, the home has been designed to respect reflect the unique character of its traditional neighborhood.
Familiar elements include a gable roof, front porches on both floors, and extended vertical columns, but with a twist. All of the architectural elements have been redefined and unplugged. The porch railing is an industrial system of steel mesh also carried through to the interior stair and loft railings as well as on the second floor terrace in the rear between the main house and detached garage.
Architect Ed Binkley selected Clopay’s Avante Collection aluminum and glass garage doors to complement the homes contemporary urban farmhouse exterior.
The Avante is the perfect choice to integrate the detached two car garage into the home’s total exterior presence, complementing major design elements like the galvanized metal and industrial steel railings. It also sets the stage for the home’s interior loft like open layout.

The ReVISION House
The ReVISION House Orlando ’11 is a deep energy retrofit project thatGreen Builder Media engaged in with partners Southern Traditions Development and Designs by Pat Gaylor.
The home, which has been built in the typical Florida block-style, incorporates advanced materials and design techniques to significantly enhance energy performance and resource efficiency, including Clopay’s innovative Canyon Ridge Collection.
Designed for buyers who love the look of wood but not the upkeep, the Canyon Ridge Collection delivers the best of both worlds: the realism and design flexibility of wood with the low-maintenance and energy efficient benefits of insulated steel.
Unlike real wood, it’s UV resistant and impervious to moisture, so it won’t rot, split, shrink, separate, or crack, thereby minimizing the use of materials, energy and resources necessary to maintain or replace door components.
The builders opted for a clear Cyprus cladding with mahogany overlays pre-finished in a dark oak stain for the ranch style home’s front facing attached garage.
