Located 25 miles from Atlanta, Senoia, Georgia's main street looks like a scene out of Driving Miss Daisy – because it actually was. The town doubles as a back lot for popular film and TV projects including the classicFried Green Tomatoes and AMC’s current television hit, The Walking Dead.

For its 2012 Idea House, the team at Southern Living decided on a historic 1830s farmhouse renovation.

The plan is an innovative blend of the regional historic farmhouse style with a few contemporary additions suited to living in the twenty-first century including an attached two-car garage with a complete guest suite located above.

The architect chose 2" polyurethane insulated 4-layer steel and compositeClopay Coachman Collection carriage house garage doors with insulated rectangular windows and an "A" frame panel design to complement the clean lines and rustic architectural style as well as provide year-round comfort to the living space above the garage.

The Southern Living 2012 Idea House is expected to draw 40,000 visitors from across the country to tour the home, which is open to the public now through December 23, 2012.

A portion of the proceeds from the home tour ticket sales ($12 ea.) will be donated to Camp Southern Ground, the charitable partner for Southern Living’s 2012 Idea House.

Zac Brown, of the GRAMMY-Award winning Zac Brown Band, donated a 500-acre piece of property south of Atlanta to build the summer camp for children ages 7 - 17 with typical and special needs.

Past Idea Homes

Clopay has partnered with Southern Living on projects in the past including the 2008 "Green" Idea House located in Whisper Mountain, N.C. (near Asheville).

The North Carolina Idea House, named Davidson Gap, is a Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) certified home, meaning it offers all the elements for healthy living and debuts Earth-friendly new home construction methods and products. including ENERGY STAR® appliances, low-VOC paint, non-toxic insulation, metal roofing, recycled natural materials, and native plants for landscaping.

The plan is an innovative blend of regional farmhouse exterior and contemporary interiors. A separate three-story barn-style structure houses a two-car garage on the first floor, with a guest suite above.

The garage was built entirely with recycled fence from old farmhouses. The architect chose Clopay's Reserve Collection Limited Edition Serieshandcrafted 4-layer grooved cedar garage doors with square windows and crossbuck panels to complement the rustic style.

Although the doors appear to swing open, they operate with convenience of an automatic opener. An added layer of insulation increases R-value of the doors to help improve the energy efficiency and comfort of the living spaces above.
