Garage Door Safety Checklist

Jun 04, 2015
June is Garage Door Safety Month

Your garage door is the largest moving part on your home and perhaps the hardest working, being opened and closed an average of four times per day. It requires regular maintenance and repair to keep it in good working order.

June has been designated Garage Door Safety Month by the International Door Association (IDA) and the Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association (DASMA).

Review this checklist to make sure your garage door is ready for action this summer.

Visually inspect the garage door for wear and tear. Pay particular attention to springs, cables, rollers and pulleys. Do not attempt to remove, adjust or repair these parts or anything attached to them. These parts are under high tension and should only be fixed by a trained garage door professional.

Make sure the garage door opener’s automatic reversal is working. Test the reversing mechanism by placing a 2-inch by 4-inch board in the door's path. If the door does not reverse after touching the object, call a qualified garage door professional for repair.

Never place fingers between door sections.

Teach children about garage door safety. Place the control switch for the garage door opener at least 5' above the floor so that small children can't reach it; remind them that the garage door opener is not a toy.

Know how to open your garage door manually in case of emergency or during a power outage.

An annual visit from a trained garage door technician can keep your door operating safely and smoothly. To find a professional Clopay dealer in your area, call 800-225-6729 or visit https://www.clopaydoor.com/where-to-buy
