From the outset, This Old House billed its 2017 Beach House in Rhode Island as a project that will inspire some serious goals for relaxed coastal living and entertaining. Trust us, it does not disappoint.
With a gambrel roof, wraparound porch, and seaside-inspired color palette, the house embodies all the elements of an iconic New England shingle-style home. But it’s the combination of innovative building materials and custom touches that give the 2017 Idea House a colorful personality with staying power.
The exterior is outfitted with durable, weather-resistant products that will withstand the elements and retain their beauty without a ton of upkeep. They include fiberglass asphalt roof shingles, rot-resistant capped-polymer decking and porch flooring, and hurricane-rated windows and doors.
Keeping with the tradition of 19th century Rhode Island architectural design, the builder selected Clopay Canyon Ridge® Collection Limited Edition Series carriage house doors for the home’s attached two-car garage.
The garage is front and center on the This Old House 2017 Idea House, so showstopping doors were a “must-have.”
The faux wood garage doors are made from a moisture-resistant composite material that won’t rot, warp, or crack. The cladding is molded from real wood boards to replicate the species’ grain pattern and surface texture for a natural appearance.
Decorative hardware makes it appear that the garage doors swing open but they roll up and down with an automatic opener.
Like wood, the Canyon Ridge garage door surface can be painted or stained. The Beach House doors were custom painted match the Watercolor Blue of the Andersen windows.

Beyond the Design – Savings, Safety and Sustainability
The garage doors on the 2017 Idea House offer important benefits beyond their low-maintenance, classic charm. The doors are constructed with Clopay’s Intellicore® insulation technology to save energy, and WindCode® reinforcement to protect the home during a hurricane.
At the heart of the Canyon Ridge door, is a 2-inch-thick polyurethane foam-insulated steel core. The five-layer door has a 20.4 R-value.
On average, garages with Clopay Intellicore doors are 10 to 20 degrees warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. They will also help keep the family game room located above the garage comfortable year round.
The polyurethane foam core is bonded to the steel surface so the door is less likely to dent. And it operates quietly because the solid core doesn’t rattle and shake when the door opens and closes.
The Beach House garage doors also have Clopay’s built-in WindCode reinforcement.
Because of their size, garage doors are more susceptible to wind damage than other exterior openings.
According to FEMA, approximately eighty percent of residential hurricane damage starts with wind entry through garage doors.
The loss of a garage door during a hurricane can cause pressure to build-up inside the house until the roof and supporting walls blow-out.
Clopay WindCode doors are installed with horizontal steel reinforcement struts and heavy-duty hardware and springs so the garage door is ready when the storm hits. The door is secured by simply locking it.
The Canyon Ridge Collection comes in several designs with optional windows and decorative hardware. Woodgrain cladding and overlay species include Mahogany, Pecky Cypress and Clear Cypress.
