2023 Residential Exterior Design Trends: Part 1

Feb 23, 2023

Just in time for spring home improvement season, we’re sharing the top three curb appeal trends that we think will “rock the block” in 2023. If you’re ready to get outside and enjoy the backyard, pay close attention to this fun way to blur the lines.

Trend #1: Indoor-Outdoor Connections

Whether installed in a garage, pool house, a home “wellness room” or a party barn for outdoor gatherings, Avante aluminum and glass doors let in natural light and separate living areas without closing them off. Photo courtesy Andy Frame.

Floor to ceiling windows and doors that blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living and flood spaces with natural light are a priority for homeowners. After spending so much time there, homeowners view their house not only as a place of work/life balance but their overall well-being.

Rooms with a view that open up to nature help maximize usable living space and achieve this effect. No longer satisfied with a sliding patio door or expansive windows, builders, homeowners and architects are choosing glass garage doors to perform multiple functions and bring the outdoors in.

A connection to nature and outdoor entertaining ranked high in “The Future of Home Design,” a recent survey conducted by the New Home Trends Institute (NHTI) in collaboration with Pro Builder. Today’s buyer prefers multifunctional outdoor spaces even on small lots, challenging architects and builders to come up with creative solutions to meet that demand.

Situated on a narrow lot, The New American Home 2022 in Orlando, Fla. was intentionally designed to maximize indoor-outdoor connections. All of the primary rooms, including the garage, open to a central courtyard with a pool providing easy access for entertaining.

Pools and spas are still popular in higher-end homes, but what surrounds, supports, and serves them — from firepits to seating areas and outdoor kitchens — is gaining interest.

Looking for a more expansive view? Check out our new Avante Sleek model, coming this spring. A departure from our standard grid frame pattern, the new version has horizontal panels with minimal vertical stiles for a clean, unobstructed view.

This outbuilding looks like a second garage but it’s actually a “party barn” that faces the homes backyard deck and garden area. Added to the property just this summer, the owners continue to customize their home with new features for their growing family.

You can see how the house and garage are contrasting colors giving off a rustic Scandinavian vibe, which leads to our next trend -- color-blocking and pattern play.

Check the blog next week as we explore easy affordable ways to update a monochrome exterior with fresh door colors and texture and how to choose a high-performance a wood-look garage door with less upkeep.
